United Methodists are part of a stream of Christianity that was founded by John and Charles Wesley. The Wesley’s held to a view of faith focused on Jesus’s “Great Commandment” to love God and neighbor. The Methodist movement (which got the name from the Wesley’s “methodical” approach to their faith) ws originally focused on small groups gathering together for accountability and support. John Wesley would propose only three rules for those seeking to be a part of the movement: avoid bad things, do as much good as possible, and do what’s needed to stay in love with God.
